Māori Symbolism in CRE-eight Designs: Exploring the Stories Behind Our Art
At CRE-eight, our designs draw heavily on Māori symbolism. Each motif carries a story and cultural significance that connects our products to the whenua (land) and mana (spirit) of Aotearoa.
Tūī – communication & life: The tūī (parson bird) symbolises communication and life. Known for its beautiful song and iridescent plumage, it reminds us to speak our truth and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Our Tūī Mirror captures this essence through a graceful silhouette perched among native foliage.
Kererū – peace & prosperity: The kererū (wood pigeon) represents peace and prosperity. As a guardian of the forest, it spreads seeds that regenerate the bush. Our Kererū Mirror celebrates this gentle giant, encouraging growth, renewal and a connection to nature.
Hei Matau – strength & safe travels: The hei matau (fish hook) symbolises strength, safety and good fortune on journeys. Traditionally gifted to wish safe travels, it connects us to the ocean and the abundance it provides. Our Hei Matau Mirror carries these blessings into your home.
Te Whakaruruhau – protection & identity: Te Whakaruruhau means 'the protector' or 'guardian'. It represents shelter and the protection of one’s whānau (family). Incorporating this motif into our designs honours the people and places that provide us with refuge and identity.
By weaving these symbols into modern mirror art and apparel, CRE-eight bridges traditional Māori storytelling with contemporary design. Each piece is not just décor; it’s a narrative that celebrates heritage and invites you to share in the culture of Aotearoa.
